Overcoming Shame

by Dr Windy Dryden

Shame is a painful but commonly felt social emotion. Using several case studies, Windy Dryden explains how feelings of shame arise and how to overcome them. He points out the difference between the actual events and how we perceive them, and how we assume other people perceive them. He underlines some of the mistaken beliefs about ourselves and others which lead us to feel disappointed in ourselves. He explores why shame is an unhealthy negative emotion, and shows how we can become less prone to feeling it.

Dr Windy Dryden has worked in psychotherapy and counselling for over 20 years, and is the author of more than 85 books. He is Professor of Counselling at Goldsmiths College, University of London.
