Coping with Macular Degeneration
by Dr Patricia Gilbert
Macular Degeneration is a leading cause of failing sight in older people. The disease causes deterioration of the macula, the central area of the retina. While new treatments such as photodynamic therapy (PDT) and laser treatment give hope, unfortunately the condition is often not treatable. However, much can be done to make the most of remaining sight. This book explains what happens when the eye is affected by macular degeneration, and how best to cope with the symptoms. There is practical advice on living with restricted sight, and the book also suggests aids, appliances, and organisations to contact for further advice.
Coping with Macular Degeneration is part of the Sheldon eye care series, including Cataract: What You Need to Know (published April 2005) and Glaucoma: What You Need to Know (published April 2006).
Dr Patricia Gilbert is author of Living with Osteoarthritis and Helping Children Cope with Attention Deficit Disorder. With a background in general practice and university lecturing, she is now a full-time writer.
